Founder, Brian Cavanaugh’s passion for fitness and exemplary human performance started early. As a life-long Virginia Beach local, his fitness roots are planted here. Brian began martial arts training at the age of 9, competed nationally in karate and American kickboxing and earned a black belt at the age of 17. His attention to small details, earned the respect and admiration of his martial arts trainers, who enthusiastically encouraged him to pursue instructor training. While employed at NIMA Karate, as a head instructor, Brian took an added interest in strength training to enhance his marital arts performance. He joined Wareing’s Gym to further cultivate his strength training skills and was once again observed to have an intuitive, helpful, non-judgemental and compassionate approach to fitness. Brian showed his natural penchant for fitness personal training early and consistently and was soon recruited to be the Assistant Manager of Wareing’s Gym. During this employment stint, Brian continued to foster his passion for mixed martial arts, human performance and the connection between nutrition and elite athleticism.
Brian’s 24/7, anytime, anywhere commitment to fitness and unwavering care for his clients led to a, now, 20-year career in fitness and personal training industry in our local, Hampton Roads. Naturally, that length of training and education comes with tremendous knowledge of a body’s capacity for human performance but not to be understated, is Brian’s first-hand experience with local boxing and martial arts gyms, bally fitness facilities, crossfit gyms, and local inlet fitness gyms. On the rare occasion when Brian cannot meet a customer’s specified fitness needs, he uses his large network of cultivated solid professional relationships within the Virginia Beach fitness scene to ensure client satisfaction. Brian acts as a referral source for these businesses and is regarded as a top personal trainer in Virginia Beach. As a personal training client of Brian’s, you will find his relationships style to be supportive and encouraging. One of his early career stories provides an excellent example of this: “while I was employed as a hotel manager of the Cavalier Hotel, I was a member of Wareing's gym. One day while I was doing my workout the guy next to me was doing an exercise in a way that would have inevitably resulted in injury. I took five minutes to teach him how to do the exercise correctly. I showed him how to do the exercise safely and then proceeded to hold his wrists, in order to guide him through the correct motions. The owner at Wareing's gym saw that interaction and asked me if I ever considered a career in the fitness industry. I laughed and asked if I would actually get paid for doing what I love. Six months later, I received the phone call inviting me in for an interview at Wareing's Gym, for the Assistant Club Manager position. That is how my career began. I accepted the job without knowing what my starting salary was because I didn't even care what I made, I was lucky enough to be doing what I loved.” Since this heartfelt and poignant interaction, Brian has amassed even more fitness knowledge and a great love for health and wellness. He and Li have gone on to focus their efforts and attention to some of the most deserving personal training clients. Their training focuses include: strength and conditioning for elite and special forces military members, strength and conditioning for local 1st Responder/emergency workers, weight loss guidance and fitness programming for bariatric surgery patients, prior and after surgery, strength and conditioning for youth athletes, customized personal training programs for veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury. Worth mentioning, of course, is Brian’s daily personal training for men and women with various fitness goals. He acts as a lifestyle coach and motivation generator for ever individual he encounters, client or not. Li Ling Cavanaugh is a professional trained physical therapist, employed by the City of Virginia Beach and a private in-home health company. In support of the "fit family" ideal, Li acts as a 24/7 consultant to Cavanaugh Fitness clients. Li's input and expertise is especially vital for those clients who need to focus on corrective exercise, as they build strength and stamina. She assists in creating fitness programs that prevent injury and incorporate the latest developments from sports medicine and physical therapy. One of the most unique qualities of Brian and Li, as a fitness duo, is the strong public support they pledge to local military support organizations. Together, they’ve acted as avid supporters of Heal the Warriors; a non profit organization geared at enhancing quality of life of current or previous service members who have suffered combat injuries, including traumatic brain injury. Brian has also had the great privilege of training individuals receiving treatments through the Heal the Warriors program. You can read more about this incredible alternative wellness based organization here… Home life for the Cavanaugh’s carries over the same values of hard work, service and gratitude. These values are applied to academics, extracurricular activities and self-development. Brian, Li and their two children, Rachel and Luke make fitness and wellness part of their daily routines and their family fun. Hiking, biking, swimming and garage workouts occur regularly at their Virginia Beach home and is shared on social media for all their family and client-friends to see. Their aim is to encourage those around them to adopt these same wellness principals with ease and enthusiasm. Living well in Virginia Beach should be easy, not a chore! Brian attacks his non-fitness hobbies with the same zest and passion that he applies to his job. He is an avid Harley Davidson rider and muscle car collector. He partners with local businesses to care for his automotive collection. In addition, Brian and Li are proud owners of a family fit dog; a Rhodesian Ridgeback named Sadie.
