Virginia Beach Injury Rehabilitation and Personal TrainingInjury Rehabilitation
What is physical therapy and why is it important to our Virginia Beach based clients? Physical therapy is the practice of cultivating health and strength, in an existing body, so that further injury can be prevented and current injuries can heal well. Cavanaugh Fitness owner, Brian Cavanaugh, is NOT a physical therapist. However, he has something that many other trainers do not have, that is a wonderful partner and wife who is a doctorate yielding physical therapist. Because Cavanaugh Fitness finds its foundation in family, Li Ling Cavanuagh’s expertise, comes as part of your personal training package. PERSONAL TRAINING CONSULTATION Upon your first visit with us, you can expect detailed attention to rehabilitation and building strength to avoid future injuries. The programs developed at Cavanaugh Fitness aim to restore, develop, or in some cases, maintain optimal ability for functional movement, even as you age. You may be wondering how we do this. The magic starts at our free consultation. Cavanaugh Fitness consultations start with a review of where you’ve been so that we know how to get you where you want to go. Your initial screening will include questions about previous injuries and attempts at rehabilitation. Perhaps you’ve sustained the same injury more than once. That is important for us to know in, as we develop your plan for sustained health. We want your prolonged personal training encounter with us to be the last time you have to think of the injury. Our aim is to cultivate a level of health that prevents injury and fosters enthusiasm for good self-care. TRAINING for MULTI-BODY SYSTEMS Our initial assessment will include a review of multiple body systems and caries over to your first scheduled session, when we will continue to assess your body, in motion, to screen for areas of weakness. We aim to make this visual assessment fairly low impact, as to accommodate all skill levels. We stimulate a cardiovascular workout to assess stamina for this type of exercise. The visual workup will evaluate how favorable or helpful your body ratios are (height to weight). Unlike other trainers, we are also assessing what you’re saying about yourself during these exercises that may be helpful or harmful to progress. For those with recent injury who may require braces or adaptive wear, we encourage use of these tools during our workouts. In an effort to be as comprehensive as possible, we are also paying attention to signs of circulation to ensure that your body is circulating blood (and life giving elements like oxygen) to support your workouts. Work with free weights will allow for us to get a sense of your body mechanics and any areas of weakness that may exist in your musculoskeletal chain. CONSIDERATION FOR YOUR MENTALITY AND STAMINA There are other considerations that go into the process of injury rehabilitation. Brian will review environmental stressors, like home and work duties that may be inhibiting your healing. We know that restricting job duties is not always an option but we may encourage you to make small modifications to your duties so that recovery is optimal. Its not uncommon for duties of professional life to put unnecessary strain on joints . Joint weakness is one of the prime causes of injury. During your personal fitness journey, special attention will be paid to correct joint placement, in order to remedy old injury and prevent new injury. The biggest factor in joint health is the mobility of joints. This is especially important at the ankle, knee, shoulder, waist and elbow points. It is for this reasons that we take extra time to ensure that your joint placement is ideal for fostering body improvement. Incorrect joint movements often happen in unsupervised exercise and can worsen injury or create new ones. TRAINING TO IMPROVE YOUR MOTOR CONTROL An often overlooked factor in the rehabilitation process is motor control. Motor control is the process of giving instruction from brain to body. It is not uncommon for individual to come to us with poor motor control or compromised ability for motor learning. We understand that it may be difficult for those new to the workout scene to learn an exercise by just watching. We attend to this by a “watch me, watch you” process. Our trainer will demonstrate an exercise while explaining it; hitting a trainees audio and visual learning centers. We will then have the trainee practice the exercise, with the trainer guiding, so that it is kinesthetically learned, as well. Muscle performance is a foundational part of all training but when the first focus is on rehabilitation, we ensure that strength, power and endurance training are incorporated. We could talk more about strength training in this section but gave attention to this topic on a whole page of this site. Read more on strength and endurance training here. Just know that we make special accommodations when we are strength training for recovery. Arguably one of the most vital aspects in injury rehabilitation is reinstating a previously held range of motion. Limitations to range of motion cause discomfort, related injuries and can seriously inhibit life functioning. Scar tissue, swelling and incorrect healing from previous injury are often the main culprits for range of motion issues. While we’ll pay solid attention to range of motion issues in fitness sessions and ease you through your recovery, the bulk of range of motion recovery work can and should be done, regularly, at home. We will provide suggestions on these home exercises if you wish to make this part of your wellness regimen. It’s important to know that while we make Injury Rehabilitation a foundational part of our practice, we do not and cannot replace a physician recommended physical therapist. We simply have the knowledge on how to improve and infuse our personal training sessions with this knowledge. If you sustained a recent injury, for which you were under a doctor’s care, you should follow any and all recommendations of that doctor. You can always call us later, we are not going anywhere. WHAT TO EXPECT As described earlier, your first session or meeting with Brian will be comprehensive in include a thorough review of all previous injuries. From the start, your Cavanaugh Fitness professionals will demonstrate correct and proper workout and recovery techniques to keep you healthy. How can do remember to attend to rehabilitation during workouts? We do this buy listening to your verbal and body feedback. Your body will tell us when it’s taxed and we’re careful when progressing beyond this point. Our love and passion for rehabbing our clients is how we stand out from other personal training professionals in Virginia Beach.
