Weight loss is a deeply personal endeavor and, frankly, most clients do not come to us with this explicit goal. More often, our new clients come to us seeking assistance with issues they developed secondary to excess weight; aches and pains, decrease in job performance, lack of energy, and just generally feeling “out of shape.” Most people have the general awareness that carrying extra weight can have negative health effects. The negatives of being overweight are more than just high blood pressure. Carrying extra weight can cause joint and muscle strain that will lead to pain and additional injury. For us, as personal trainers, this a great motivation for weight loss. All the above being said, one of the most refreshing Cavanaugh Fitness qualities that our clients become aware of is our respect for our clients at their current body weight and fitness level. For those who do have weight to lose, it can often feel intimidating walking into a gym because you might expect to be judged negatively or criticized. While we cannot speak for other fitness establishments, at Cavanaugh Fitness, we are glad you are here and harsh criticism is not something we believe is helpful in personal training. Listen, we won’t go easy on you because you’re paying us to make you fit. While your body may feel sore at the end of every workout, we want your mentality to feel strong. You are making every effort at personal growth and we honor that. When we do have clients who come to us explicitly for weight loss, we provide this honest feedback: exercise (in the form of our personal training sessions and your independent workouts) can get you but so far. Bodies are (mostly) made in the kitchen. It’s important to note that starting with workouts will make a difference to the effects of weight loss. The effects of high blood pressure, heart and respiratory conditions can all be positively impacted by regular cardio-vascular workouts. FAT LOSS
One of the biggest factors in weight loss in dropping fat and at Cavanaugh Fitness we have a dual pronged approach: we ensure firming of skin and improving of posture WHILE the fat burns off. This helps stave off the excess skin effect that sometimes comes after significant weight loss. We start with a focus on the cardiovascular activation warm up and then progress to stretch exercises so that we can assess muscle tightness or weakness typically demonstrated by bodies with excess weight. With clients who have significant weight to lose, safe modifications are made to certain exercises to protect the joints. We watch closely to ensure that back and knee positioning is safe and correct. Once light cardio and stretch are completed, we will likely move on to full body circuit training. The aim of our circuit training efforts is to maintain an elevated heart rate. We simply assess heart rate by observing our clients respiratory and conversational patterns. This may be temporarily uncomfortable for our client but heart rate increase (and subsequent difficulty with small talk) tells us that fat is burning. DIET AND PERSONAL TRAINING As stated earlier, bodies (whether fit or fat) are made in the kitchen. There are many misconceptions on how we should be eating if we’re trying to shed fat and the one we most often hear is that fat (as in the dietary kind) is bad. Nothing can be further from the truth. “Good” fats actually help reduce our cravings for the bad (read: “fried”) kinds. Protein, as most know, is our friend. If your personal goal, however, involves shrinking of any kind, we do not want to over do the protein. Extra protein is fine for before workouts but keep protein within the realm of normal rations at other times of day. One of our favorite nutrients for our clients with weight loss goals is fiber. Foods high in fiber allow for speedy removal of excess waste. We also encourage clients to indulge in lower calorie snack options throughout the day. Fruits and vegetables are both friendly for a trainee who is weight conscious because we might make more specific recommendations in this dietary area, depending on client goals. The lower calorie technique we mentioned earlier tends to scare some clients but, worry not, we encourage our clients to eat often. They are simply just making better choices when they do eat. FASTING or STARVING of any kind are not a dieting techniques that we suggest or engage in. BURN FAT, TONE BODY After working with Cavanaugh Fitness on your weight loss and nutritional goals, you will notice that, since your weight loss, your skin is not as firm. As pounds of fat melt off, you will suddenly be able to see your body’s tone and structure. At this point, we will further specify our workouts so that areas that need toning are targeted. We will add some heavier weights at lower repetitions to foster strength building. POSTURE Last but not least, we like to give special attention to body posture for our weight loss clients. Your body has become accustomed to carrying a certain weight and when that weight comes off, the musculoskeletal system may need assistance to calibrate properly. Our customized, post weight loss work out, will focus on stretching the chest and strengthening the back so that your body demonstrates a correct and healthy posture.
